3. Do I get paid if my assignment is cancelled in the morning?
As per CA 11.10 (b) If an assignment is cancelled in the absence replacement system least 75 minutes prior to the start of the assignment, the Occasional Teacher will not be paid for the assignment. If it is cancelled in the absence replacement system less than 75 minutes prior to the start of the assignment, it is expected the Occasional Teacher will be paid for the assignment and shall be assigned appropriate professional duties.

4. Can I cancel an assignment?

5. How long must one be in a LTO in order to write report cards?
As per the CA 19.04 (a) Long-Term Occasional Teachers shall be given notice during the first

6. Am I to complete morning duty if I’m assigned to it?
As per CA 19.02 Notwithstanding Article 19.01, Occasional Teachers may only be assigned the supervision duty regularly assigned to the teacher being replaced prior to the commencement of class on the first morning of an assignment when the yard duty is known ninety (90) minutes in advance of the start time. 7. Am I allowed to be assigned to a DECE position?
No, you may not be assigned to a DECE position, however, you may be assigned as an additional teacher in a kindergarten classroom, if a DECE is not available. You would be paid the Occasional Teacher rate and would follow the timetable of the other Teacher in the classroom. If you have ECE qualifications AND are on the DECE Occasional list, you may accept a DECE job and be paid the DECE rate.
8. Am I allowed to be assigned to an EA position?
No, you may not be assigned to an EA position. If you have EA qualifications AND are on the Occasional EA list, you may accept an EA job and be paid EA rate.
9. How many sick days am I allocated as a LTO?
In a 1.0 full year LTO, you have 11 sick days, 120 short term leave days and 5 supplemental days. If you are on a part time LTO. or part year, including extensions, your days are prorated and can be seen in your payroll portal.
10. When supplying for a teacher, am I allowed to be pulled from PT?
As per CA 19.01 (b) A casual Occasional Teacher will be released from the assigned class during the preparation time portion scheduled for the teacher being replaced. That preparation time is to be covered by the teacher regularly scheduled to provide the preparation time for the absent teacher. (c) if there is more than 50 minutes of preparation time in that day they may be reassigned within the same subject area/division or assigned appropriate professional duties at the discretion of the principal.
11. Can I leave the building during Planning Time?
No, you cannot leave the school. This is paid time is used to prepare for the upcoming portion(s) of the day. You may request from the admin if you have a specific need to leave the school building. It may or may not be granted.
12. How early must I show up for a PM assignment?
As per the Education Act, you must be at school a minimum of 15 minutes early in the morning and 5 minutes in the afternoon. You may want to arrive earlier in order to be prepared for the assignment.
13. What is the roster?
The Occasional Teacher roster is the term developed by the ministry which replaces the previous term, Occasional Teacher List. This includes everyone who is eligible to do daily work, short-and long-term assignments.
14. What if I have an unsuccessful interview?

In accordance with 12.04 (a):
(a) The board will consider written applications for permanent teaching positions from Occasional Teachers who have completed either three or more successful Long-Term Occasional assignments, or one Long-Term Occasional assignment which includes completion of two sets of report cards, and are currently on the Occasional Teacher Roster.
(b) If there are no qualified applicants, the board will consider the applications of external applicants. Not with standing the above, this Article will not apply for specialist positions as identified under the Education Act.

16. Do I get paid for a snow day?
In accordance with 17.01 (c) A casual Occasional Teacher called to an assignment and, upon arriving at the assigned school, finds the school closed or about to be closed, shall be paid for the proportion of the day that the assignment entailed, subject to Article 13.06(b).
17. Can I access benefits as an LTO/OT?
Daily Occasional Teachers do not qualify for benefits. Teachers in a Long Term Occasional
position for 90 plus days or longer are entitled to benefits according to their FTE.

18. What happens if I report to a school and the job is cancelled?
13.06 (a) In the event that an Occasional Teacher is requested to report at a school for duty, and then, on reporting, is advised that the assignment has been cancelled, the Occasional Teacher shall be paid for the proportion of the day that the assignment entailed, providing the Occasional Teacher accepts, if requested, and alternative comparable teaching/supervision assignment at that location.
19. What happens if I accept a job after the start of the school day? Do I still get paid for the full day?
13.05 (c) When an Occasional Teacher is contacted and accepts an assignment after the start of the instructional day, the teacher shall be paid for the full assignment as identified in the absence replacement system, provided the teacher reports to the school prior to the commencement of the second instructional block and contacts the school to provide the estimated time of arrival.

21. When does an assignment become an LTO?
4.02 Long term Occasional Teacher means an Occasional Teacher is employed for a period of ten (10) or more consecutive teaching days as the replacement for the same teacher. If a PL day falls within that 10-day period, it shall not interrupt the ten (10) days.
22. How can I increase calls?
You can update and increase your number of schools and classifications in ATE as often as you like. You can also decrease the number of schools in the same manner.

24. Are my OCT fees automatically deducted?
If you are a daily OT, you are responsible for paying your fees. If you are in an LTO, your fees are deducted from your January pay stub.

26. Am I able to work 2 half day assignments even if I can’t get to the school for the specified start time?
LOU#1 An Occasional Teacher may accept another half-day assignment for the same day as long as they can arrive at the afternoon assignment no more than 30 minutes after the start time. It is the Occasional Teacher’s responsibility to contact the school office if they are going to be late for the start of their assignment.
27. What are the minimum occasional days I must work to stay on the OT roster?

28. If the start or end time of my assignment doesn’t fall within the half day or full day time frame, does my pay get adjusted for the portion of the day I worked?
An Occasional Teacher cannot be paid for less than a half day, however, it is possible that you can get paid for greater than a half day, but less than a full day. (i.e. .66) 13.05 a) Where an Occasional Teacher is employed on a part-time basis to replace a teacher, the Occasional Teacher’s salary shall be pro-rated according to the terms of employment of the teacher being replaced.
